If you don’t know of Shit My Dad Says, then you are just not cool. Well, not necessarily. You are just not on Twitter apparently.
Allow me to educate you. Currently 1,359,244 followers strong, @shitmydadsays is a Twitter account started just 9 months ago, already earning its own book and TV show. Started by Californian Justin Halpern, the account is described as this: “I’m 29. I live with my 74-year-old dad. He is awesome. I just write down shit that he says.”
In the beginning, many thought the Twitter account was something of a Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey, possibly even from a known comedian who had fabricated the whole concept in the name of humor. But it was soon learned that Mr. Halpern, his dad, and the shit he said were very real.
“After being dumped by his longtime girlfriend, twenty-eight-year-old Justin Halpern found himself living at home with his seventy-three-year-old dad. Sam Halpern, who is ‘like Socrates, but angrier, and with worse hair,’ has never minced words, and when Justin moved back home, he began to record all the ridiculous things his dad said to him.”
Thus the famous and hilarious Twitter account was born, so that we could all share in the shit his dad said. Halpern has recently used a bit more than a 140 characters to write a memoir by the same name based off the crotchety, foul-mouthed filled adventures of having his father as a roommate – the book was #8 on the New York Times Best Seller the week it was released. And even more recently a based-on-a-true-story TV sitcom starring William Shatner, created for CBS by Justin along with a little help from Will & Grace creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick. The first ever to be spun-off of a Twitter account in fact.
The show stars Shatner as Ed Goodson, a Sam Halpern-esque father who comes under an awkward living situation when Henry, his out of work, struggling writer/blogger son, must move back in with him. The show also stars Mad TV alums Will Sasso and Nicole Sullivan. The role of Henry, played by Ryan Devlin in the pilot, is currently being recast. CBS recently announced the show as a part of its Fall 2010 line-up, with a 8:30 PM time slot on Thursdays.
Is anybody else interested in this show? Or have read the book? I'm quite excited for it myself.
