There are some people out there who don't think James Van Der Beek is one of the most gorgeous things to ever walk the Earth. (inside-joke, I think at least one person here will get it) See, I did not know this. I was too mesmerized. Not only by his amazing looks, but by how mesmerized others were by his looks. I guess since the show's ended and only now been relegated to re-runs (and since Matt Dallas from Kyle XY came on the scene, though now that that series has faded and the actor has changed his look several times- we realize he pales in comparison to "Dawson"), folks think some other teen idols out there are better looking. www.imdb.com/media/rm183278336/nm0004735I still haven't watched the show in years, but years ago this was the reality: "Tall, blonde, and possessing a choir of perfect teeth that would make any dentist jealous, James Van Der Beek has emerged as one of the ultimate teen pin-ups of the late 1990s. First attaining prominence with the title role of Dawson Leary in the WB Network's Dawson's Creek, Van Der Beek proceeded to branch out with film and stage work, and in the process managed to be anointed in 1998 as one of People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful." - Rebecca Flint Marx, Allmovie.comOf course, I assumed you don't have to be someone who thinks the guy is dreamy to like this show. But, it is one of the main attractions. For the few people watching the show who didn't think Joey Potter was the 2nd coming of Winnie Cooper. What is the majority opinion on the character if people actually think he's ugly? What do you think about this character?

Dawson is just too damn annoying.
He's whiny, overdramatic, and not even that great of a friend (He forgot Pacey's sixteenth birthday, plays with Jen and Joey's feelings, etc.).
I don't think it was James Van der Beek's portrayl of Dawson, I think it was just Kevin Williamson's writing of the character... which is odd, since I really like all of the other characters.
Dawson did lighten up in the fifth and sixth season (Perhaps because it had become Joey's Creek by then?) so it tainted the obscurity of his early seasons character.

I used to have a crush on Dawson when I was younger, but I don't really see the attraction any more. Well, no, that's a lie, he was hot in OTH actually, once he lost that floppy hair thing. I've always had a soft spot for his character though. When I rewatched the series a couple of years ago, I did realise that he was an ass through the whole Joey/Pacey thing. I can understand he was hurt but he carried it on so long. He really changed, and for the better, after he spent time with Gretchen, she did wonders for him. And then I was back to liking him again. I think he gets a lot of flack just because so many people prefer Pacey (who has just as many flaws as Dawson does, btw ) so they tend to write him off and not take a look at him aside from being part of the love triangle. He's totally annoying and pretentious as a teenager but come the 'college years' the dude just knows. So, after that ramble (I'm trying to avoid doing work here) I'd say, yup, I'm a fan!

He reminds me a bit of Lucas from OTH during the college years, and ONLY the college years.

JVDB is hot...Dawson I only found attractive in seasons 5&6 and I think that was because the character was less annoying than in earlier seasons and I prefer him with the shorter hair. In seasons 1-3 he was so self obsessed and it drove me crazy! Now when JVDB plays other roles that are un-Dawson as I say he is extremely attractive!

I just realized why I think Dawson was so annoying in high school.
He tried to imitate his life to be like movies, and created unnecessary drama for himself and for his friends. I think he wanted to be older than he was, and kind of mirrored what he thought of as maturity into his life, when he was just acting pretentious.
Thoughts?

Good thoughts Pacey Witter...I think you are right on also Dawson was a classic only child. No offense to anyone who is (I am) but we tend to be self obsessed and selfish I sure was back in my high school years lol

I do think he wanted his life to be like the movies, I don't think he necessarily created drama. I think Pacey was much more about the drama, lol. But I think he made situations more difficult to resolve by approaching them as if he was in a movie...does that make sense?
I saw a hilarious tweet from Van Der Beek today - someone asked if he gets sick of seeing the clip of Dawson crying as Joey walks away (you all know the one he means) and James replied saying 'No, because the hair was awesome' lol
I loved Dawson because he was so passionate, even in his more annoying days. He's so much more likeable in the fifth and sixth season but I'd also go so far to say that I think a lot of that is to do with him losing his virginity, lol. I think it helped him chill out a little.

Eve, Gretchen, and Joey (During that weird sexual phase she went through when they first started dating lol)

Of course he did! Especially in season one.
And whether or not he wanted to have sex or not has absolutely no bearing on the fact that he calmed down after he did. He changed once he had that release, he chilled out and hit the earth with a bump. Because sex, just like everything else, was put on a pedestal and then he got to come face to face with it and release it wasn't the be all and end all.

I never understand why people hate Van Der Beek, I think he is a really good actor, though his character Dawson can get me once a while, but he did justice to it. Don't tell me you never meet anyone like Dawson? whiny, self-obsessed, annoying? ;D

The main reason I think people got annoyed with Dawson, is because it's so easy to relate to him lol.
